fter much thought, and to keep myself occupied I gave myself a side project of creating drop caps (the A starting this paragraph is one of them). After surfing the web and finding fantastic designers, no one has caught my eye more than Jessica Hische. I got the idea of doing drop caps from her Daily Drop Cap series. It's something I've never formally done before (creating my own letters) and I thought it would be a great personal project for me. Initially I thought of creating a few to use as art for my 3 year old son's room (he's really into the alphabet right now). But, after creating my first letter I got so happy/excited/motivated that I figured, why not create one every day and see what kind of stuff I can come up with? I think this little project has inspired me to start designing my own typography rather than using the traditional fonts for purchase. And who knows, maybe in the future I'll jump into creating my own fonts.
And what I find so ironic about this is that when I was younger I used to create my own letters all the time for class assignments, hand-drawn posters and art projects. I'm not sure why my college experience killed that for me, (I feel it's been the reason for my stifled creativity) but I'm glad that my eyes were opened again to the obvious talent I've been ignoring for the past 12 years.
